The benefits of drinking matcha tea during your period

We're often on the search for natural remedies for menstrual cramps and other period-related problems. Like other teas such as raspberry leaf tea, matcha tea can be a powerful natural ally for your cycle. If you're looking for period relief, here are some reasons you should try a cool iced matcha latte or hot matcha tea as a solution.

What is matcha?

Matcha tea is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves. Its origins date back to ancient China, but it became more widely known and developed into its current form in Japan during the 12th century. The Japanese Zen Buddhist monks played a significant role in cultivating matcha as a part of their meditation practices. The tea was valued for its calming yet energizing properties, helping monks maintain focus during long periods of meditation.

The tea plants used for matcha are shaded for about 20–30 days before harvest. This shading process increases the chlorophyll content in the leaves, giving matcha its vibrant green color and boosting its nutrient levels, particularly in amino acids like L-theanine. Only the youngest, most tender leaves at the top of the plant are picked by hand, ensuring the highest quality.

Matcha is exceptionally rich in catechins, a type of antioxidant. Antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It also contains  L-theanine, which promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness, making it ideal for reducing stress and anxiety.
